Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is traveling to Bermuda today to attend the funeral of Peter Green, a well-known businessman and lifelong friend of the Trudeau family. Trudeau will be delivering a eulogy in honor of Green, who passed away recently.
Peter Green’s family owns a luxurious estate in Jamaica, which has been a retreat for both Justin Trudeau and his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, for many years.
Justin Trudeau's last stay at this Caribbean estate, provided at no cost, sparked political controversy earlier this year. At a time when many Canadians are facing financial strain due to rising living costs, the vacation drew criticism and fueled debates about privilege and optics for public officials.
Despite public scrutiny, Canada’s ethics commissioner decided not to investigate the trips, recognizing the close, personal bond between Trudeau and Green. This relationship dates back decades, with the elder Trudeau’s ties to the Green family beginning as early as the mid-1970s.
Pierre Elliott Trudeau reportedly visited the estate multiple times, a tradition that Justin Trudeau has continued. Additionally, Pierre Trudeau served as godfather to Green’s son, Alexander, who spoke at his father’s funeral in 2000.
Trudeau's visit to Bermuda is expected to be brief, with plans for him to return to Ottawa by the end of the day, according to his official itinerary.
