Krysty Bujakowska Death, Obituary: Caitlin Clark shows love as Iowa mourns the tragic death of 12yo Krysty Bujakowska

No matter who came before or who comes next, if there is one thing Iowa will always take pride in, it is its unwavering sense of community and strong connections.

From the standout achievements of WNBA phenom Caitlin Clark to the unforgettable spirit of young Krysty Bujakowska, Iowa's commitment to its people runs deep.

In 2023, the University of Iowa had the privilege of honoring Krysty Bujakowska, a 12-year-old from Coralville, as the honorary ‘Kid Captain’ during the outdoor Iowa Women’s Basketball game at Kinnick Stadium on Sunday, October 15.

The event marked a special moment for Krysty, a young girl whose journey had already shown remarkable strength and resilience in the face of cancer. Tragically, Iowa recently had to bid her farewell, and Caitlin Clark, an iconic figure for both the school and the state, joined in on paying tribute to her.

Clark shared her heartfelt remembrance on her social media, posting images of Krysty with the Iowa Women’s Basketball team, including a moment where Krysty was seen signing a ball with Clark herself.

The carousel of images also featured Krysty in Iowa colors on the basketball court, alongside new head coach Jan Jensen, a visual reminder of her bond with the team and her place in Hawkeye nation.

Caitlin Clark’s post, adorned with six white hearts, expressed her deep connection to Krysty, emphasizing the profound impact the young girl had on everyone she met.

Before Krysty was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 10, she was a vibrant, healthy athlete, passionate about gymnastics, swimming, trampoline jumping, bicycling, and even chess.

However, everything changed when a lump above her knee was discovered, leading to a diagnosis that would alter the course of her life. "You don’t expect to hear anything like that," said her father, Michal, reflecting on the moment their world was turned upside down.

Despite undergoing initial treatment that appeared successful, Krysty faced several recurrences of the cancer, each one challenging her in new ways.

Throughout this journey, Krysty was treated at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where she developed close ties with athletes and became an inspiration to everyone around her.

The Iowa Women’s Basketball team, with its iconic colors of black and gold, shared their condolences and gratitude on their Instagram, posting two hearts representing the team. “💛🖤”

The message echoed the sentiment that once you become a part of the Iowa family, you are always a part of it, a sentiment that Krysty embodied through her Kid Captain honor and her positive influence.

Fans and community members expressed their love and sympathy, with one writing, “You fought hard, brave girl. Now you get to rest. My deepest condolences to all who loved Krysty.” The Coralville Food Pantry also paid tribute, saying, “Thank you for showing her so much love.

Rest easy, sweet Krysty.” Her oncologist, Dr. David Dickens, reflected on Krysty’s indomitable spirit, noting, "Despite all this, Krysty remains a positive and kind child who spreads joy wherever she goes."

Krysty’s mother, Kate, shared the joy Krysty had for the event at Kinnick, remembering how her daughter had been excited about the game and the opportunity to represent Iowa.

“We watched so many times from the hospital window,” Kate said, “She’s very excited to be on the other side and wave to all the kids.”

Though Krysty’s family has endured tremendous hardship in these last two years, they found comfort in the love and support from the Iowa community, which rallied around them in a way only Iowa could.

Krysty’s wish to be part of the Iowa Women’s Basketball team’s special day was fulfilled, leaving a lasting impression on her and the many people who witnessed her courage and positivity.

As the community reflects on her life, fans and friends have expressed their sorrow, yet also their gratitude for having had Krysty in their lives. "May Krysty’s memory be a blessing and an inspiration to us all," one fan wrote.

Another shared, "Rest in peace, sweet angel! One of the highlights of my summer was meeting you. You are so loved and will be forever missed."

Krysty Bujakowska’s time on Earth was far too short, but her spirit will forever remain a part of Iowa, a school that has always prided itself on the strong bonds it creates.

Her legacy will be carried on by the Iowa Women’s Basketball team, by Caitlin Clark, and by everyone whose life was touched by this incredible young girl. While she may no longer be with us, her memory will continue to inspire and live on, not just in Iowa, but in the hearts of all who knew her.
