I-77 Accident, Interstate 77 Northbound Shut Down 6-car Crash in York County, South Carolina

A multi-vehicle crash involving six vehicles, including multiple 18-wheelers, caused significant disruptions on Interstate 77 northbound in York County on Monday morning. The York County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) reported that two lanes at mile marker 84 were closed due to the incident, which occurred around 6:20 a.m., and were expected to remain shut for several hours.

Minor injuries were reported among those involved, and one individual was trapped for approximately 20 minutes before being rescued and transported to a hospital. In addition to the injuries, the crash resulted in a fuel spill from the saddle gas tanks of two 18-wheelers. A Hazmat crew was dispatched to clean up the spilled fuel, ensuring the safety of the area before reopening the lanes.

During the closure, traffic was diverted to Exit 83, creating significant delays on I-77 and surrounding primary roads. Commuters faced extended travel times as backups continued to grow throughout the morning.  By 8:35 a.m., one lane on I-77 northbound had reopened to traffic. However, YCSO noted that additional crashes on side roads exacerbated the congestion. Drivers were advised to exercise caution, avoid aggressive driving, and allow extra time for their commutes.

The crash serves as a reminder of the risks involved in high-traffic areas and the importance of maintaining safe driving practices. Law enforcement and emergency crews worked diligently to manage the scene and minimize further disruptions.
